Burnout Legends

Brought to you by : Schwarz Fauxstein On Tuesday, February 17, 2009 0 comments

Burnout Legends is the fifth game in the popular Burnout franchise, specifically released for the PlayStation Portable on September 13, 2005, and the Nintendo DS on November 29, 2005. The game features many of the tracks and gameplay modes from the first three Burnout games, but repackaged for the handheld format. Many of the gameplay modes are similar to Burnout 3 using some old and new tracks. (Note: This article mainly refers to the PlayStation Portable version.)

In the game, you compete in a series of racing modes to unlock new tracks, cars, and events. The following list the 9 main types of modes in the game:

  • World Tour: Compete against other cars in different varieties of modes (see below). The world tour is divided by car types. Get a medal (Gold:1st place, Silver: 2nd place, Bronze: 3rd Place) in a series to unlock Grand Prix. Finish gold in grand prix to unlock next world tour series. World tour is the primary way to unlock cars.
  • Race: Race against up to four cars (world tour default is 4) in a 3 lap race on any track.
  • Eliminator: (Only accessible in world tour) Same as a race, only on each lap the lowest ranking car is eliminated. Race goes until one winner is left.
  • Face-Off: Race against a legend car to win the car.
  • Time Attack: Race against the clock. The goal is to complete a lap as fast as you can. You can do as many laps as you like.
  • Burning Lap: World tour version of time attack. You try to complete a lap by the medal time (Example: Finish before gold medal time 1:00:00 to earn gold medal).
  • Road Rage: Make other cars crash to earn takedowns. In world tour, you will have a time limit. You finish by running out of time on the clock or inflict too much damage.
  • Pursuit: You play as the cop. Try to take out the bad guy before time runs out or your health gets too low.
  • Crash: Compete in crash events to unlock new cars and levels. (Also in world tour.)

There are a total of 89 cars to unlock through the various modes: compact, muscle, coupe, sport, and super. There are also cars to unlock by completing all pursuit, road rage, etc. events. These are from Burnout 2 & 3.

This game also has Collector's cars. There are 5 special cars for each class, however you only start out with just one (like Collector Car 3). To get the other four, you have to challenge another player on Wi-Fi battle mode, betting your collector car against his and win their car in the challenge.

Ratchet & Clank: Size Matters (PSP)

Brought to you by : Schwarz Fauxstein On Tuesday, February 17, 2009 0 comments

Ratchet & Clank: Size Matters is a platformer/shooter video game in the Ratchet & Clank series for both the PlayStation 2 and PlayStation Portable. It is the first Ratchet & Clank game on the PSP handheld, and the 5th in the series. It was developed by High Impact Games, a company spawning from the original Ratchet & Clank developer, Insomniac Games. The story is about Ratchet and Clank as they are interrupted from their vacation to search for a kidnapped girl and encounter a forgotten race known as the Technomites. It is the first Ratchet & Clank game to get an E10+ rating by the ESRB with the second title being Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction for the PlayStation 3.

While on a vacation on Pokitaru, Ratchet and Clank meet a little girl named Luna who is writing a school report on heroes. Shortly after they meet her, Luna is kidnapped by mysterious robots. Clank then stumbles upon a mysterious artifact from an ancient race, the Technomites whereafter Ratchet and Clank set out to save Luna. Clank suspects that Luna is actually a robot controlled by the Technomites, using the same wording Ratchet did in the original game when Clank is fooled by the Captain Qwark robot. In the process, they discover the forgotten race of smart but diminutive inventors, and also encounter Captain Qwark, who is attempting to find his birth parents. Ratchet encourages him to use the internet to aid in his search, and he goes away.

Later on, Clank's suspicions are confirmed when they see Technomites entering the Luna robot, but shortly thereafter, Ratchet is kidnapped and drugged, and Clank is forced to fight a huge dropship with machine gun hands. After destroying the robot, Clank sets off to save Ratchet, whose DNA was stolen in order to produce super-powered clones. Emperor Otto Destruct, leader of the Technomites, has recognized Ratchet's potential and hopes to use his DNA to produce the ultimate soldier. After being tracked down and defeated on Dayni Moon, Luna reveals the clone plot to Ratchet and Clank and explains the Technomites are bitter for never receiving credit from the general population for their technological advances.

After defeating Luna, Clank tries to get the clone factory co-ordinates from Luna, but gets infected with a computer virus and malfunctions. Ratchet uses his shrink ray to go inside Clank, meeting his internal security system (which bears a distinct resemblance to Barney Fife), and they collaborate to eliminate the intruders and restart Clank's processor. Clank reveals that he did obtain the factory co-ordinates before being deactivated, and they head to a planet known as Quodrona. After killing dozens of clones, Otto tells them that what Luna told them was a "cheesy story", and what he really is after is to be immortal, using a special machine that transfers the intelligences from one being to another.

Qwark, persuaded by Otto, thinks Otto is his father and temporarily fights on his side. Otto gets in the life-sucker and is fought inside it. Ratchet and Clank eventually defeat him after a long battle. After beating Otto, they learn that Qwark's real parents were killed by defective equipment made by the Technomites. Qwark tries to use Otto's machine to give Otto the intelligence of himself, Skrunch interferes and Otto then gains the intelligence of Skrunch. Back in Ratchet and Clank's apartment on Megapolis on planet Endako in the Bogon Galaxy, the Ratchet clones become action figures that keep the shrunken Qwark company while the two heroes watch TV

The PSP version of the game received overall positive reviews. Game Informer rated 9/10 and awarded it the "Handheld of the Month" for April 2007.[2] Size Matters received a rating of 85 out of 100. On the other hand, the PS2 port of the game got lukewarm scores, with IGN giving it a score of 6/10, citing its poor graphics, dull gameplay, and glitches.

Syphon Filter: Dark Mirror is a third-person action game developed by Sony Bend and published by SCEA, released in North America for the PSP on March 14, 2006 and Europe on October 6, 2006. In Dark Mirror, players take on the role of Gabe Logan and occasionally Lian Xing, special operatives for a secret government agency. In Dark Mirror, a mysterious operation at an Alaskan oil reserve has Gabe investigating the cause. He is quickly presented with a deeper operation that has him venturing across the world.

A paramilitary group calling itself Red Section has attacked KemSynth Petroleum, a refinery on the Alaskan pipeline. Washington has ordered a precision strike: Lian and Gabe are to infiltrate the area of operation, recon Red Section forces, and execute a surgical strike.[1]. At the end of the game, it was revealed that Singularity (whose real name is Grant Morrill), built Red Section from scratch, and learned about the project Dark Mirror, a powerful nerve agent that does not dissipate in the air. Instead, it bonds to the oxygen molecules and grows more deadly. In essence, it was a weapon of mass destruction.

Game modes

The game is Ad Hoc and Infrastructure compatible, both supporting up to 8 players in a single game. Players can use the PSP Headset online to chat with others in the pre-game lobby, and in-game.

  • Deathmatch

Standard deathmatch. The player who reaches the point limit or has the highest score after time runs out is the winner.

  • Team Deathmatch

There are three factions, the IPCA, the Akram Brotherhood, and Red Section. Each has their own unique weapon sets. The team who reaches the point limit first or has the highest score after time runs out is the winner.

  • Rogue Agent

When the game starts, every player is on the same team. Everyone must rush to a fixed location and run over a kit to become the rogue agent. The rogue agent is then teleported away from all other players and spawns with a new skin and a special weapon. Kills only count for the rogue agent. When the rogue agent is killed, he drops the kit, and whoever runs it over becomes the new rogue agent. Whoever has the highest score after time runs out or reaches the kill limit is the winner.

  • Objective

Each team has a set number of lives and they must complete objectives to win. One team must defend while the other team assaults, either trying to destroy something or carry an object back to another location. If a team completes all objectives before time runs out or defends successfully, they will win. If a team's reinforcements are depleted, they lose.

Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops (PSP)

Brought to you by : Schwarz Fauxstein On Tuesday, February 17, 2009 0 comments

Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops (メタルギアソリッド ポータブルオプス Metaru Gia Soriddo Pōtaburu Opusu) (commonly abbreviated to MPO) is a stealth game directed by Masahiro Yamamoto, with series creator Hideo Kojima acting as a producer. Portable Ops was developed by Kojima Productions and published by Konami in 2006 for the PlayStation Portable. It is the third Metal Gear title for the PSP and the first one to retain the series' action-based gameplay. It is also the first canonical outing of the series for a portable platform, following the storyline of Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater.

Set in 1970 in South America, six years after the events of Snake Eater, the game follows the exploits of Naked Snake after his former unit, FOX, goes renegade. The game also chronicles the eventual founding of FOXHOUND and The Patriots, as well as the inspiration of the military state Outer Heaven.

Unlike the previous titles on PSP, Metal Gear Acid and its sequel, which were turn-based tactical games with stealth elements, MPO retains the action-based gameplay from the console iterations, drawing heavily from Snake Eater and utilizing the camera system from Subsistence.

The main addition to MPO is the Comrade System. Instead of the solo missions that the series is known for, MPO goes for a squad-based approach, with Snake having to recruit allies and form a team of trained specialists. Before each mission, the player must compose a four-man squad. The squad is then sent into battle. Each member of Snake's squad has their own strengths and weaknesses. While some units are best utilized on the battlefield, others may specialize in producing items, healing allies, or providing intel for each of the game's maps.

During gameplay, the player controls only one squad member at a time. The squad members not in use hide themselves inside a cardboard box, and can be swapped into play when the player-controlled character finds a hiding spot, where they can hide in their own cardboard box.

Characters who are killed in combat are eliminated from the player's squad permanently, unless they are special characters, such as Snake. Special characters also include team mates that are bosses or supporting characters in the story. If a special character's health is reduced to zero, they are sent to the infirmary, in order to recover. The player can also abort the mission.

A variety of methods can be employed to expand one's squad. If an enemy character is tranquilized or stunned, they can be dragged to a waiting vehicle and captured. After a period of game time, the captured soldier will become a member of Snake's team. Also, enemy characters can be dragged to an ally waiting in a cardboard box, where, through the use of a transceiver frequency, they will be ordered to transport the enemy for the player, saving stamina. Alternatively, by accessing the PSP in certain hotspots using the system's Wi-Fi feature, soldiers and even special bonus characters can be recruited. The PSP GPS Receiver can also be used to similar effect. Because some of the player's recruits include former enemy soldiers or personnel, they can walk among the enemy undetected as long as the player avoids suspicious actions.

Another new feature is the surround indicator added to the game's HUD. Similar to the radar in previous titles, the surround indicator allows players to determine the relative proximity of enemy soldiers by the noises they make. The surround indicator is composed of two circles; the outer circle displays the noises made by enemies and inner circle displays noises made by the player himself.

The game also contains a Wi-Fi-enabled multiplayer mode, which is an expansion of the Metal Gear Online mode previously featured in Subsistence. One's performance in the Online Mode may affect their performance in the single player campaign; the player can recruit and trade soldiers from beaten opponents, or vice-versa. Additionally, certain multiplayer options result in recruits being removed from the one's single player roster permanently. In contrast to the console games in the series, the cutscenes that drive the story are not rendered using the usual in-game engine. Instead, they are presented using an animated comic style comprised of hand-drawn artwork by artist Ashley Wood. This style was previously utilized in Metal Gear Solid: Digital Graphic Novel. The game also features voice acting, consisting of returning cast members from Snake Eater and new actors. However, the number of cutscenes and in-game voiced sections are minimal, due to the PSP's UMD storage capacity constraints.

Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories (PSP)

Brought to you by : Schwarz Fauxstein On Tuesday, February 17, 2009 0 comments

It’s time to return to Liberty City, the town where all the rules were broken as Grand Theft Auto 3 revolutionized gaming and made the GTA series the biggest franchise on the planet. The PlayStation Portable edition is an all-new game set in the seedy, sprawling underworld of Liberty City. The story takes place three years before the events of GTA III and centers on Toni Ciprini, who has just returned to Liberty City after laying low for four years. He killed a rival mob boss, after all, and leaving town is simply the smartest thing to do. Anyway, he strolls into town and lands in the warm embrace of Don Salvatore Leone, who quickly places him under the command of “capo” Vincent Cilli. From here, Ciprini embarks on a journey filled with more blood, explosions, and executions than a stack of Schwarzenegger movies.
